Stop the Escalation in Iraq

Stop the Escalation in IraqWes Clark has put this new ad from Vote Vets on his MySpace page. Powerful stuff.

Steampunk... Lightsabers?

Steampunk Lightsabers Um... Why does this tickle me and make my brain hurt at the same time? Somehow I both want one, and want to hide my head in shame for the impulse. Generation X should be stepping up to the plate right now, as the first generation to grow up fully indoctrinated into the digital lifestyle, and leading the world. I mean think about it, we're full adults now, old enough to run

No pais do marcelinhos...

Ninguém aqui é a favor do aborto.

Tenho dito, porra.

OK, so I upgraded to the new version of Blogger a while back, but left many things the same in the actual look of the blog, because I'd put a lot of work into tweaking my template the way I wanted it.Well, I've finally bitten the bullet and changed to one of the new Blogger templates. I miss my old Gecko and Fly template, but this one will allow for a lot more tweaking, and I finally get to use

O mod e o punk

the clash live

E os crachás eram dos The Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Stranglers, Stray Cats, Birthday Party, Sonic Youth, Subhumans, Siouxie & the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Cramps, Alien Sex Fiend, Madness, Dead Kennedys...alguma pouca coisa comercialoide à mistura e alguns de Heavy Metal.
O nome desse power trio era The Jam.

the jam

(sorriso pepsodent)...donde são originários estes The Gossip. Soltem as feras... The Gossip e Standing in the way of control!!...

Ok. Então fiquei com estes The Presets, reparem nas luvas do men que tá lá atrás do outro...Desconfiados!? Pois...

Agora a sério, este Over and Over rodou vezes sem conta na minha cabeça...Não sei porquê!?

Os álbuns são o His´n´Hers, o Different Class e o This is Hardcore, todos de noventas.

skagirldance

A festa senhores, é a festa.
E é no Maxime, pois é. Tudo exclusivamente sessentas. Espero que todos se divirtam.

Current show at Roq la Rue

Current show at Roq la RueI should be painting, I know...instead I am surfing about painting... which requires an even more highly tuned BS detector than surfing about scooters, politics, or even what the Freemasons are really up to...So any way I happened upon this...Jean-Pierre Roy's small urban scapes of destruction are stunning. Interesting collection of Victorian sketchesI just happened upon this collection of sketches by William Henry Charlton, a Victorian gentleman artist. In ways I am fascinated by his subject matter as a cultural and

Reparem no elaborado movimento "hide and seek".
...Get Ready e aparecam no Maxime.

Monday 15 January 2007

Yeah desta vez é à grande!

1967

Original Crank

To replace or not to replace -- that is the question. Because the price to replace the original crank with a MeCur repro was a bit cheaper than fully restoring our original crank we opted to replace. Furthermore, there was the potential that the original crank would not be a good mechanical investment in the long-haul. The top photo is the outside and the bottom photo is the inside. The photos are AFTER the crank was cleaned up. It was a rust rock.

We gave Christopher the crank and he is restoring, balancing, and trueing it. If you are in need of an original crank you can contact him (his contact info can be found in the navigation bar under Moto-Rapido).

It was a major pain in the butt to find a replacement crank. It was a timing issue. Repro cranks were not being produced. I called over a dozen shops and I waited for four months before Danell, from Scooter Parts Direct, tipped me off to Garner Classic Scooters. I called Garner and lucked out. It cost me $165 and had been on his shelf for years. Christopher informed me that there was some minimal surface rust which he removed with some extremely fine steel wool and oil.

Restoration: Engine Progress

This post is more of a sneak peak than anything else. The engine will be sealed up this weekend. I am not going to go into detail about all that's been done with the motor in this post; rather I will save it for the "unvailing" of the engine when it is 100% complete. Christopher Markley is a "must keep" mechanic. He has done a great job and has always come to us with solutions accompanying any problems he has come across -- nothing worse that someone who comes and just reports the problems.

Shroud and flywheel covers are powder coated with to look similar to stock as well as look pretty through the engine cowl "grill".

Without a doubt, Christopher's attention to detail did not stop with the internals of the engine. He continued to add little subtle finishing details on the externals of the engine using a "mock chrome" powder coat finish.

Restoration: Kickstand

All in all our kickstand was in decent shape. Originally it was rusted, slightly pitted, and bent -- so that the legs were not paralled. As I said in an earlier post my computer hard drive died and lost 90% of all the original photos I had of the bike; therefore I can not provide you with a "before" photo. It was sandblasted with body and treated with PPG metal cleaner and conditioner, which all sat for over a year in my very dry basement. None of the parts were ever touched by bare hands after sandblasting, even with the PPG product protecting them.

I hired Christopher Markley to powder coat it and the mounting brackets the stock coat with the very slight matted look, as it likely came out with from the factory back in 1967. Before Christopher painted it he used his hydrolic press to bend the kickstand back in place. Pictured above is the finished product at Moto Rapido, Christopher Markley's shop.

Now for the discussion of purity, we know that powder coating was not available until the 1970s I believe (do NOT quote me) and therefore the restoration of this kickstand is inaccurate to what the manufacturer produced. My stance on this restoration is that powdercoating can take a decent beating and this scooter, which is midly customed, will be riden and enjoyed. It is important to me that the bike continues to look good and hold up as it being enjoyed. I believe that the powder coat is the perfect solution, because it will still look "stock", but be able to withstand pebbles and rocks hitting it as the bike is ridden.

Fuck dance, Let's art.

it´s pop it´s art

'It's Pop It's Art' is built upon a passionate love of both music and art. Taking our lead from the world's influential musicians, typographers and the pop art icons of the 1960's, we aim to visually celebrate the many bands that can catapult our emotional states any-which-way with the use of a microphone, guitar, drum machine and a trusty pen & paper. The song is where the emotional connections sparks, and the lyric is where the whole trip begins. Finally, an alternative to having that kick-ass lyric tattooed on your... well, ass. It's a lot less painful, and the whole world can enjoy it without you having to drop your trousers (we're not trying to stop you from getting the tattoo, we just don't necessarily want to see it...). Custom designed limited edition prints that have your wall screaming the lyrics along with you. Fuck dance, let's art.

Acústico, elétrico, electrónico, bandas sonoras, colaborações, o amigo Iggy Pop, e a maneira

Fork & Shock Disassembly

It's my intention to rebuild the front fork according to the "how to" link in my "Resources" list in the Blog navigation bar. I also plan thoroughly clean and baum spray my forks. I will Zinc plate my shock housing, according to Tecnica this is how the original shock was done.

When rebuilding the shock use the parts book for GS/SS from www.scooterhelp.com and the diagram is far more detailed than the SS one is.

First, I ordered a replacement dampner seal for the front shock for $10 (very hard to find) from Motor Sport Scooters and I purchased the second to last one in existence & from what I later learned the last one was also purchased. Suggestion -- you'd be surprised with what seals and rings your local vintage motorcycle shop has in stock. I know that a local vintage motorcycle shop my buddy, Ted Witmer, frequents specializes in "suspension" and he has found a hard-t0-find piece of rubber for my shock there as well when every single scoot shop I called did not have the part. Next I need to replace the pivot pin (pictured to the left) -- part #47 in part book drawing below. From what I understand it is not the easiest part to find; therefore be careful when removing in case you need to reuse. I will follow-up to this post and report on my search for this part #55271.

To disasemble the fork from the shock, you need to remove the cotter pin "screw" (#47 in the part book drawing) located near the grease nipple, then just push the pivot pin sideways. You can loosen the nut and put a socket behind the pin and pressed it out with a vise. Once the tapered pin is out, the pivot pin should just push out with your fingers. Try not to damage the tapered pin -- as stated it may be difficult to find a replacement, but if you can throw the old pivot pin and bearings away and get a rebuild kit.

A BIG thank you to Flaco, Trace, The Self Presevation Society, and all others from Scoot BBS for the help.

Note: more information to follow as it is completed.

Body work 30% done

I took these pictures two or three weeks ago when I posted the engine-side cowl restoration post. The body required mild to moderate work. Since these photos I am sure it looks a lot different.

There are a few "dents." Note the dent beneath the tail loght area and the two dents on the front of the scooter on the pictured above.

The streaking color you see here is a normal by-product of the PPG cleaner and conditioner I used on it.

The front fender had a slight tilt to it and some nicks and nacks. If you look at the "history" post you can see what it looked like before -- when it was still complete. I suspect the bike had been laid down once or more.

The glove box metal was thin on the underside in a few spots, but all in all in good shape.

As you can see this cowl is in MUCH better shape than the engine-side cowl was. My only concern is with the wider (incorrect) louvres I used on the engine cowl is the inconsistency with the manufacture's ribs on the picture cowl here. On the flip side, it's not possible for a person to look at both sides of the scooter at the same time without a mirror - ha.

You can see pictures of the engine-side cowl in the "engine-side cowl restoration" post on this blog.

Lessons Learned

Attention newbie restorers!

These are the most important lesson I can offer you at my own personal expense.

1) Double your budget
2) Triple your timeline
3) Relax, make this fun (the two items above will help you achieve this)
4) Research every little step. Make sure that each part you replace or add to your bike is original to your scooter. If cost a little more, but is closer to original. Go that route. This may slow down the restoration, but it's okay. I learned a tough lesson when restoring the engine-side cowl louvres. My louvres are incorrect. I could see that when they arrive and did NOT ask my weld/body/paint guys what it would cost to fabricate some that are correct. I did not email Scoot BBS and ask for advice. I just moved forward.

AND most importantly

5) I did not start off this restoration with the mind-set to keep this bike as "pure" as possible. I adopted this approach half way through my restoration as I learned more and more. My suggestion is: START OFF WITH A PURIST APPROACH and you can always back off as you see fit. It's like cutting hair, it's easier to cut a little off until it's perfect as opposed to cutting too much off and then to have to add hair extensions.

mod tv fantastic life

Senhoras & senhores...The Aggrolites!!

Steampunk PDA

Steampunk PDABrass Goggles just hipped me to this great site for anachronistic gear, Jas Townsend & Son. This pocket notebook is made of brass and ivory, and is... well I'll just let the Townends tell ya:It's the 18th century version of the PDA. Beautifully crafted here in the US. Based on an original that Jefferson owned. These are made of sturdy brass stock with 4 old ivory pages and a pencil.

Medium Blasting

I've read about the dangers of "sand blasting" and "acid dips"; although I wonder if there are appropriate times to acid dip as long as the necessary precautions were taken to counter act the acid, thoroughly dry, and prime paint the metal immediately. Sand blasting sounds overall too abrasive. I am a 9th grade English teacher and education field we often "steal" or "borrow" ideas from one another -- it's common place. Why recreate the wheel?

As far as I am concerned, the same goes for restoring a scooter; therefore I took my advice and followed in the steps of a local Lambretta restorer, Stuart Werner, who has restored a countless number of bikes. I followed the trail he left and had the SS180 sand blasted with a recycled medium by Seibert's Sand Blasting for $106. Per Christopher Markley's advice I used a spray product called "Zero Rust", which converts & seals rust in the area beneath the gas tank that the sand blaster could not reach. I also prepped the metal with PPG "cleaner" and metal "conditioner" and stored the bike for over one year in my dry basement -- two feet away from a 25 pint dehumidifier. I then took the bike to K & K Autobody and Paint, where it currently resides. K & K have painted more scooters for Stuart than you can count on your fingers and toes. They know how to do it well and take pride in it and the reputation of not giving you guff if you are unhappy. They just make the situation right.

Liberal is not a Dirty Word.

And neither is conservative.Of course it would be nice if we could use these words according to their true meanings, not the strange Orwellian Media-speak meanings that have come to be associated with them. Here's a nice little vid of Bill Maher and Wes Clark tilting at that pop-linguistic windmill.

Busted Gear Selector Box

From what we know our Vespa had been abused by teenage boys back in the early 1980s and used as "dirt bike" then stored away after the piston seized and left untouched for 20 years. Take a look at the gear box selector -- see the crack!

Christopher Markley thoroughly cleaned prior to final engine assembly and beneath some goo found this crack, which is where the rod passes through. He suggested either welding or replacing, but after having discussion with expert techie Tom Giordano . . . it was decided replacing would be best for the long run.

Of course this part is specific for GS/SS and in no longer produced, but luckily after several phone calls I found two shops that them in stock new the box. It cost me $90 to buy from Scooter Parts Direct. It's in the mail.

I opted not to TIG weld, which is an option, "because the boss seems to be NOT only cracked, but also worn somewhat oval, so the shaft running through it can wobble. This would probably guarantee oil leaks and sloppy shifting. It might be possible to bore it out and then put in a bronze sleeve, but the work involved would make the repair cost as much or more than the replacement part and wouldn't be a 100% sure-thing," according to my most trusted Christopher Markley. Bottom line: I am not that much of a purist. I want this bike to be as reliable as possible. New is the best choice in this specific situation for me.

Part #59523 GS/SS Gear Selector Box (complete)

Note: A Rally gear selector box will not fit the SS, even if the parts book confuses you, according to a post I put up on Scoot BBS.
